Here on the left, you can see the direct connection between myself and my great-great-grandfather, Élie Landry. In addition to his son Excide, he had a daughter, Mélina Landry, who was the mother of Gabrielle Roy, the renowned French-Canadian author.
Thus, my grandmother, Éliane Landry, was a cousin of Gabrielle Roy. In her autobiography, The Distress and the Enchantment, Gabrielle recounts how she spent many weekends at her Uncle Excide's home. She deeply loved these trips to her cousins in Somerset; for her, it was a true escape.
During the summer of 1936, Gabrielle spent over a month in Camperville with my grandparents, Laurent and Éliane. Here is the description from an excerpt of La détresse et l'enchantement:
