The Three Branches of Jubinville
Michel Jubinville and Marguerite Barbeau, married at the Notre-Dame Church of Montreal on June 8, 1706, had four sons and three daughters baptized. Three of these sons ensured the lineage and distribution of the names Jubinville-Jubenville-Jubainville across North America.
The family settled in Côte St-Michel, in the center of Montreal Island. This area was part of the Parish of Notre-Dame de Montréal until 1720, when the parish of St-Laurent was founded. Côte St-Michel later became part of the Parish of Sault-au-Récollet upon its establishment around 1736.
Jean-Baptiste
Born August 21, 1707. Called St-Michel. Following his marriage to Angélique Houé dit Jolicoeur 🔍 in 1733, he settled a bit further west of the paternal land.
Jean-Baptiste
Born May 26, 1710. Married to Angélique Quenneville 🔍 in 1741 in Lachine. He remained with his mother on the paternal land and baptized his children at Sault-au-Récollet.
Michel
Married Marie (Charlotte) Bourdon in 1734. This branch eventually settled outside of Montreal Island.
Michel Jr. - A question of paternity
The third son to ensure a lineage, Michel, married Marie (Charlotte) Bourdon in 1734 (also at St-Laurent parish). Michel and Marie remained in the parish of Sault-au-Récollet for about a decade before moving outside Montreal Island to settle in the parish of Lanoraie, northeast of the island.
As mentioned on the page dedicated to Marguerite Barbeau, it is not historically proven that Michel Jr. was the biological son of Michel Sr. Let's have a closer look at the declarations made by Michel Jr. on his marriage record (Record Image 🔍 – summary of the act) before Jacques Le Tessier, missionary priest of the Saint-Laurent parish, on October 11, 1734…
The record celebrates the marriage of Michel Jubinville, stated as "being about 29 years of age." If so, this would place his birth around 1705, whereas his parents were married in June 1706. Furthermore, I have had the opportunity to carefully comb through all parish registers following the marriage of Michel Sr. and Marguerite Barbeau, and we find the baptisms of ALL the couple's children, except Michel. This indicates that the child baptized as "Jean-Michel" by Marguerite Barbeau on April 20, 1705 (of an unknown father) would be either the adopted son of Michel dit St-Michel or an illegitimate son later recognized by the latter as his natural son.
Also present at this marriage were his mother, Marguerite "Barbot," and his following brothers and sisters: Jean-Baptiste, François(*), Marie-Catherine, and Marie-Angélique. Also attending were Catherine Barbot and her husband Pierre Richer, aunt and uncle by marriage of the groom. (Catherine was the youngest sister of Marguerite, 20 years her junior). Pierre Richer, dit La Flotte, was 20 years older than his wife and was also a Marine soldier in the Duplessis company, just like our common ancestor, Michel Jubinville, dit St-Michel.
Two days before celebrating this marriage, the future spouses went before the notary Jean-Baptiste Adhémar de St-Martin to sign the marriage contract. In it, the future groom notably declares owning a piece of land in L'Assomption (Parish of Lanoraie) where the family would soon establish themselves.
